International Mulled Wine Day

International Mulled Wine Day is march 3rd this year, and yes this post is a day late, but heading into the weekend with this info made a bit more sense to us, so here we are.

We know that mulled wine has as many haters as it does fans, and some of those fans have mixed feeling overall. But during the cold weather (if you have any), it can be a delightful, spice-laden way to shake off the chill.

We are certain that a handful of readers have never had the pleasure of tasting a mulled wine, or even know what it is. So in this article we will provide all the info needed to get off on the right foot.



Mulled wine, (aka spiced wine), is a hot drink usually made with red wine and a little brandy, then blended with whole mulling spices such as cardamom pods, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, and perhaps allspice. Other ingredients such as orange slices ,raisins, and even peppercorn make their way in as well. Sweeteners range from sugar or honey, to maple syrup. It is a traditional drink during the cold season, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Going out and finding some concoctions at a local market is a tradition for many people, but taking the time to make your own is an even larger tradition still. And while there are a few key rules to adhere to, it's always fun to play with a recipe, and really make it your own.

We find it best to start with a more traditional setup, and when that become good and familiar, you can branch out and get a little weird with it. So we have included a delicious recipe to start with, because of course we would :)


  • 750ml of a full-bodied red wine (x2)
  • ½ cup of Brandy (no need to get pricey here)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 15 whole cloves
  • ½ cup of cranberries
  • 2 oranges, sliced round
  • 4 star anise
  • Add sweetener to taste


Throw everything into a pot, med-high heat to very early simmer *NO BOILING*. Drop temp to med-low and leave it for an hour, strain and use leftover whole ingredients to garnish as desired. Nice and easy.

And don't forget your serving temperature, try and keep it around 110°F.
